Mind Over Matter or Matter Over Mind?

by Jason Patocka April 5, 2010

Reverse engineering of the brain is providing some answers in the hot field of Artificial General Intelligence. Previously we highlighted efforts with IBM’s Bluebrain project, but also of note is the work that Palm computing founder and TED darling Jeff Hawkins is doing with his work on Hierarchical Temporal Memory.

One of the largest criticisms of AGI proponents is that one can’t understand how to program an AGI if we collectively can’t understand how brains work. fMRI technology has greatly accelerated the underpinnings of neuroscience. Additional advancements in biotechnology are finally allowing researchers to monitor biochemical reactions at the sub-cellular level in real time. Previously, the primary way to determine what was occurring beyond the cellular membrane was to rupture the cell and then sift through the molecular debris. Obviously, this isn’t an ideal way to examine working cellular components, let alone the working orchestra that is physiology.

These days, questions in neuroscience largely lie with how all of these components interact across systems. Modeling is proving to be a very useful tool, but one also can’t refute the contributions of basic physical research. The prospect of leveraging these discoveries in creating a true AGI system is quite exciting. If you stop and think about how far robotics has advanced in the last decade, the evolutionary progress that machines have achieved is breathtaking. Just a few years ago they had trouble navigating around walls. These days they’re autonomously driving across landscapes, dropping bombs, and folding towels with ease.

Can’t wait to see what the future holds, but these days its fun to stop and think that the future really was yesterday.

  5. 6 Megabits? In Hong Kong we already have 21 Megabits! and it's still considered 3.5G…our 4G speeds are forecasted to be in the range of 50Mbps!

  7. Max, yes, US speeds suck. According to Sprint their 4g speeds will average 3-6MB/s http://www.nextel.com/en/solutions/mobile_broad...

  11. Well, I've been obsessively checking every day, all day long for news of a 2.1 upgrade for my Hero. To be honest, I didn't think we would see a 4g phone until the end of the year. It may be impetuous and ridiculously optimistic, but I'm planning to buy the Evo for myself and my boyfriend just as soon as it hits the shelf. I've been waiting a long time for this kind of hardware on an Android device. I was an early adopter. I've had a G1, a myTouch and now a Hero. My dad has my boyfriend's old G1, My boyfriend and I both have Sprint Heros now. We had to switch networks when we couldn't get voice or data coverage in our home or offices. We have Clear Networks as an ISP, so I'm super psyched to see Sprint partnering with them. And I'm way excited about the possibility of simultaneous voice/data services. Anyway, glad to find a community like http://www.Evo4Gforum.net with full of people as anxious as I am for the release of the Evo.
